This crisis has been further exacerbated by limited access to addiction treatment and healthcare services, creating a complex set of challenges for the community. The landscape has evolved to include a surge in illicit opioids, such as fentanyl and heroin, which have led to a drastic increase in overdose deaths within Sussex and across the state. Follow these five simple steps to help prevent a death by administering Narcan, then get your free Narcan by mail or at one of our many locations across Delaware today!
The person will not wake up or is very sleepy or not breathing well. Yell “Wake Up!” Shake the person gently
Hold your nasal spray device with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger. Insert the nozzle into either nostril. Press the plunger firmly to administer the first dose. 1 nasal spray device holds 1 dose.
Call 911 immediately after administering the 1st dose.
Wait 2-3 minutes to give the first dose time to work. If the person wakes up go to step 5. If the person doesn’t wake up continue to give the person another dose until they wake up.
Stay until the ambulance arrives, even if he person wakes up.
Give the person a second dose if they become very sleepy again.
